Plant Spotlight: Sage
A favorite in English, Italian and German cooking, sage is a flavor that’s often associated with roasting meat. Sage is often regarded as a medicinal herb, included in so many a healing concoction it was said “Why should a man die if sage grows in his garden?” according A Book of Herbs and Spices.
Growing notes:
• Can handled poorer soils, but prefers better drainage. If planted in clay soil, make sure it’s on a hill, not a valley.
• Partial shade is fine, but will die under full shade.
• Perennial. Cut back in the late fall/early winter and you’ll see new growth in late winter/early spring.
