Plant Spotlight: Red-veined sorrel

New to me, though I’ve seen it in several magazine spreads of fancy restaurants. I grow common French sorrel and have found it a great edition to making salads more interesting. I’m excited to compare the flavors.

Growing notes:

• A perennial that will die back in the fall, but re-emerge in the late winter.

• Likes partial shade and can tolerate poor soil.

• Sorrel also can take some highly trafficked areas. The French sorrel I have gets run over fairly regularly by dogs, goats, birds and lawnmowers and survives it all! Though they do look a little worse for all the wear.
