Plant Spotlight: Corn - Hickory

New to me. Heirloom dent corn selected by Native Americans in Georgia and Florida, according to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Dent corn is best for cornbread and roasting. Plants can reach heights of 15 ft.

I’m growing these for two reasons: 1.) I want to see if I can grow corn and 2.) I want to use them as bean trellises. If you just plan on using them as a trellis, one or two orders should suffice (depending on how many beans you plan to grow). If you want corn earns, you’ll likely need to buy three orders to insure adequate pollination.

Growing notes:

• Corn is pollinated through the wind and needs several plants to achieve adequate results. Plant 12 - 24 inches apart in a block to help pollination.

• If you’re looking for corn cobs, I’d suggest three orders.

• This is not a fresh-eating corn! This is a roasting corn.
